Install Ruby as User
Ruby is a very common language exspecially for Web-Applications you can use Rails or Sinatra for fast an comfortable Development. Unfortunately ruby wasn’t installed in my University’s PC-Pool. So I needed to install Ruby and Sinatra manually and as user-Install. To do this theres a tool called
First you need to download rbenv:
git clone https://github.com/sstephenson/rbenv.git ~/.rbenv
After installing you need to setup your shell:
echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.rbenv/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc echo 'eval "$(rbenv init -)"' >> ~/.bashrc
To install a new version of ruby you also need the ruby-build-plugin.
git clone https://github.com/sstephenson/ruby-build.git ~/.rbenv/plugins/ruby-build
Now you are able to install ruby. Open a new shell and type
rbenv install 2.1.2
Where 2.1.2 is the ruby-version you want to install. Finally you need to set up the version you want to use by typing:
rbenv local 2.1.2
Thats all. Now you can install gems by typing
gem install [GEMNAME]. All your gems are installed locally.
